Plasmacluster Ions – The One & Only Reliable Ionic Air Purifier Against Bird Flu Pandemic Fears?

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

27 August 2008 may prove to be a pivotal point in mankind’s war against the much-feared bird flu pandemic. On that day, Sharp Corporation unveiled its latest technological weapon against the unseen enemy! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in destroying the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

Every now and then, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic does not just sound terrifying. It is. That’s when a deadly virus turns totally global, in a very negative sense. History records for us that 50 million people may have died during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic! World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on 5 October 2005 that the 1918 Spanish flu was caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.

PANIC STATIONS! PANIC STATIONS?

Not just yet. The H5N1 virus was identified in China in 1996. Up to 10 Sep 2008, WHO data puts the death toll at 245, a “relatively small number” statistically. So what’s the fuss? A bird flu virus that attains human-to-human transmission capability is the ultimate horror of the scientific community. As I write, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if (it seems the virus has not reached the “when” stage) the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

Countries are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At the individual level, we should start making preparations too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Is it not just another ionic air purifier? It is ordinary in that it performs the usual functions of the run-of-the-mill air purifier by getting rid of dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine and pet odours, pollutants, allergens etc. If there is really a tested defence shield against a deadly virus, why not? The complete package is promised in Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier.

Obviously, for the value-conscious, the next logical question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? According to Sharp, none at all! Sharp contends that it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier when measured over 5 years. Value for money grabs my attention anytime! How is it possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

It is entirely possible, says Sharp. For example, there is much better value for money in its Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At US$399, the Sharp model compares favourably against a typical competitor’s ionic air purifier that may cost US$160 upfront but over 5 years cost a total of US$560 due to annual filter replacement costs of US$100 each.

If you have relevant data, be it on Sharp or the competitors, I would greatly appreciate your input. Just email me if you have actual numbers.

Meanwhile, I’m going to seriously investigate this Sharp Plasmacluster IonTechnology. Now is the time to research, while bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Join me in my quest. I have been there. Recall the last disaster movie when you saw people with terror in their eyes, many with the famed N95 face mask covering their noses as they commute to work. But it was no movie but real life in motion in many Asian cities. Those who could not find the scarce N95 face mask could only pray that they were not the next victim of the near-pandemic scenario that swept across Asia. The year was 2003. SARS was a much dreaded acronym. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus started spreading in Asia and infected 8,096 people around the world, resulting in 774 fatalities. Being well prepared is half the battle won.

Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.

What are Democratic Elections Really?

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Interestingly, the phrase “democratic elections” seems to come up most often in news stories from countries where fair elections are conspicuously absent. They’re stories that tell of opposing candidates threatening each other with violence, whole boxes of ballots being thrown out, or scores of people being turned away from voting centers due to their ethnicity or religion.

In cases like those, many who call for “democratic elections” want nothing more than to be able to vote without fear and know their ballot will be counted. They’re too busy dealing with immediate problems to look at the nuances of democracy.

At the same time, there are those who even say in countries considered highly democratic, like the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and many Western European countries, elections aren’t truly fair. So what exactly does the term “democratic elections” mean anyway?

Free competition: the key to democratic elections
Fair competition and open debate are of the hallmarks of free and fair elections in any democratic country. Just because the ballot has more than one name on it does not mean there’s fair competition though. If the ruling powers continually threaten opponents and opponents’ supporters with reprisals, open debate is next to impossible.

Free elections are run fairly
Another major issue when it comes to democratic elections is the way the elections themselves are administered. In a fairly run election, all citizens registered to vote can do so without fear or extreme difficulty. An honest effort is made to ensure ballots are counted correctly. In countries just starting to hold elections, part of fairly running things means making sure people understand how to register to vote, where to vote, how to fill out a ballot, and other topics people in long-time democracies consider common knowledge.

No one-shot wonder elections
Democratic elections don’t happen just once. In democratic countries, elections re-occur after a set period of time. For general elections, that’s usually somewhere between 2 and 5 years. People, public opinion and important issues change over time so citizens are frequently given a chance to change elected officials.

Of course, it’s entirely possible to elect a dictator or an elected head of state to turn into a dictator, but once that happens, the country is no longer a democracy. In this case either elections are eliminated or only sham “fixed” elections are held to maintain the farce.

Citizenship and voting rights for all
Giving “adult citizens” the right to vote doesn’t mean much if the government refuses to grant full citizenship to a large portion of the population. If women or people of a certain race, ethnic group,  or religion are barred from holding full citizenship and voting, the elections are not considered fully democratic.

Truly fair and democratic elections offer considerable benefits to a country’s population. When the majority of adults are free to vote without fear and have the opportunities to change or re-elect officials on a regular basis, the government is far more likely to act for the good of the people. The details of how democratic elections are run can get a little confusing but they are well worth learning about, especially for the voters.

How Suits of Armor were Created

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Men and women have not been the only ones to ware suits of armor through history. Suits of armor have even been used in order to outfit animals such as horses and elephants. called barding to road carts, rail roads, ocean vessels and airplanes.

The first known application of suits of armor to a mode of transportation was the efforts of the Romans’ to protect their chariots with leather, laminated woods and any other material that was handy.

While at sea, a French Ironclad ship La Gloria was the first to sail into battle in 1859 with a series of protective suits of armor designed to reduce the chances of a fire developing onboard during a battle. On a side note, this caused one of the first arms races, like in 1860, the United Kingdom started making ships with suits of armor for the purpose of keeping up with the French.

Use of armor suits to protect trains first started used during the American Civil war and use of these suits continued very heavily until the Russian Civil War ended. in 1920. The time between World War I and World War II saw the advent of both the tank and the armored airplane–arguably the most efficient use of suits of armor to date.

Trench warfare, typical of the First World War, exacted a great human cost on opposing troops while battle lines moved inches, if at all, during days of brutal engagements. Armor suited tanks (much like suits of armor) were a great weapon offensively when it came to disrupting enemy battle lines for ground troops.

And, for pilots, developing a way to cover the shell of aircraft in protective suits of armor greatly increased their chances of survival.  Air forces were revolutionized when airplanes, outfitted with suits of armor, found here, not only protected a pilot with a more rigid frame (in case of a crash landing), but also increased his protection from cockpit-piercing gunfire and gunfire that, upon piercing a fuel tank, could ignite a fire.
